Where do you get one? Applications for NJ marriage licenses must be obtained at the municipal office in the bride's town. If the bride does not live in the state of New Jersey, you can apply at the municipal office of the groom's town. If both the bride and groom are from out of state, apply at the municipal office of the town where the ceremony will take place.
How much does it cost? Due at the time of application is the fee of $28.00.
Who must be present when you apply? The bride, groom and one witness who is 18 years of age or older and knows the couple.
What type of identification is required? Birth certificates are required for proof of age. If you do not have your birth certificate, TWO (2) other forms of ID with your date of birth on them are required. Other acceptable forms providing proof of age are: Driver's License Passport Baptism Paper DD2-1Y Military Release Paper Non-Driver's License Photo ID
Some towns will require proof of residency such as a driver's license, lease or tax return.
What are the age and consent requirements for minors? Any person UNDER THE AGE OF 18 needs parental consent papers signed by both parents. If under the age of 16, parental papers and a form signed by a judge are required. These forms are available at the Registrar's Office.
What if the bride or groom has been divorced? If either the bride or groom or both are divorced, the Registrar must be shown a copy of the divorce papers with the FILED DATE AND DOCKET # on them. It must be the FINAL DECREE signed by the JUDGE.
What if the bride or groom is widowed? If either the bride or groom or both are a widow or widower, the Registrar must be shown a copy of the death certificate of the deceased spouse.
Is a premarital physical exam required? Premarital blood tests are no longer necessary in New Jersey.
Is there a waiting period? There is a seventy-two (72) hour waiting period from the time you make application for the marriage license until the time you can pick up the marriage license.
How long is the license valid? It is recommended that you apply at least two weeks before the ceremony. You may apply as early as 6 month prior to the wedding. The marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
When should the license be filed? The individual performing the ceremony should file the license with the registrar in the municipality where the marriage took place within 5 days of the wedding.
